The Artist's Statement on the wall of my studio is printed in colored
crayons and reads,
"I
like to make things".
Until
I was 40, this urge manifested itself primarily through hobbies,
gardening and home improvement. At that time, I took a six
week class in stained glass at the local adult education program.
Wow! A whole new world became available. I found the best teacher
I'd ever had and began learning about design, color and light.
I've been learning about them ever since. I worked with stained
glass for about thirteen years and had some very satisfying
successes. One of the highlights was fabricating three windows
for Martin Scorsese's mausoleum, although any time a completed
project matched the original vision was a thrill. During this
time I also experimented with making glass sculpture, furniture,
and jewelry. The jewelry looked very different from anything
else I'd seen and after receiving compliments and inquiries
from friends and others who saw it, I decided to market it
to galleries. Producing and marketing the jewelry became my
full time job. While I mostly had a great time with this work,
again after about thirteen years (is there a pattern here?),
I found myself exploring another direction. Clocks. This probably
came out of all the delicious symbolism around 'time' - and
what fun to be working with a larger form. The added appeal
of being able to combine materials cemented this as the direction
to pursue. I've been making
for almost two years now, so in about another eleven, I'll
let you know what's next!
